I know it's not spring, but my computer needs a spring cleaning. I have the nasty habit of bookmarking everything I think is cool, then forget I've bookmarked it, search it out again and bookmark it again. A very vicious cycle. My bookmarks tab goes on forever.
So, as I was going through them, I found some very cool blogs that I put in my bloglines (www.bloglines.com), so I won't lose them again.
I think I've mentioned them before, so my apologies, but How About Orange is, well, very orange, and I love the colour.
Then, there's Design Freebies, they wade through the ton of freebies out there, tons of free, cool stuff.
If you get excited when you see an email from a friend, but it's just a forward, here's a gentle way of letting them know. StopForwarding sends them an anonymous email letting them know.
Lastly, Briar Press has a 500 or so free ornaments to download.
I'm an occassional runner, but I run just to run, just for me. I know there are all kinds of running groups out there that raise money, such as Team in Training or National AIDS Marathon Training group. Today I found some other ways to give back while running.
For you Marathon Medals:
If you've ever wondered what to do with that pile of medals you've amassed from all of your races, check out Medals 4 Medals whose "mission is to celebrate and reward the individual and collective courage of all human beings by facilitating the gifting of marathon finisher's medals from marathoners to people who have demonstrated similar mettle or courage."
For your shoes:
Shoe Bank - provides shoes for twenty thousand people every year – primarily children, both here and abroad.
Sole Responsibility - a non-profit organization formed by a group of runners in Ottawa, Canada who want to donate gently used running and walking shoes overseas
Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program - where worn-out athletic shoes of any brand are collects and recycles them (rather than going into landfills) into material used in sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds for kids around the world.
I read the occasional tabloid from time to time and found some wisdom in it. I know, I know, what could you possibly helpfulness could I possibly glean from an overpaid actor, but this surfer dude has a "laissez-faire" attitude that this angry one could use from time to time.
"Just keep living is free enough that you can't really ever make the
wrong choice. And it's not an ownership idea…Sometimes it's as basic as
waking up and saying, 'Thanks for another d-a-y,' you know? It wasn't
guaranteed. Other times, when you got other things going for you, it's
'What do I do with all the gifts I've been given?' Sometimes it's,
'Let's really bear down and get to work.' Other times it's, 'Nope, it's
time to just sit here and relax and have a little listen to some
music.' Whatever that is, it's something personal to everybody, it's
not just me. It's helped me navigate." Read the full article by Jennifer Cady.
Ok, maybe not the tonic, but yes Gin and Transfers! I found this cool tutorial on how to transfer onto Polymer Clay and a bit of gin.
Check out (that's where the Gin comes in)
Put your image ink-side down on the wet clay. Using the image as a template, use your knife to cut the clay to the same dimensions as your image. Pick both clay and paper transfer up and place on a sheet of wax paper, burnish a bit with your finger. Then drop some gin with an eye dropper (yes, alcohol, unfiltered, the cheapest) onto the paper side of the image and wait until that absorbs into the paper.
Go to see Fire Mountain Gems for the rest of it.
I in no way want to get into a political discussion, nor do I wish to espouse a political opinion. This is merely my fascination with the media in the US. I find it remarkable the venues that have entered the political race and wonder are they really sharing an opinion or are they just profiting on ignorant wannabees? (rhetorical question, either way it's messed up)
I've been busy working on silly things and can't stay focused to save my life. I took the day off yesterday from checking emails, which was a mistake, and has taken me an hour or so just to go thru them all. In that I found some fun things that made my Friday morning a little cheery.
First off, was Vanilla Garlic. Love it. Love Garlic. You see, I am a garlic fanatic, if the recipe says 1 clove, I put in the whole head, much to my partner's dismay as I don't have garlic taste buds, it takes a lot for me to taste it. Check out their post from today about Fermented Garlic. And yes you eat it.
Have a great Friday!
